Needs and Wants

One of Lily’s little quirks is that when she gets an injury, she refuses to hold an ice pack on it.  Somehow (and I can’t remember the strange steps that led us here) this has evolved into her eating ice chips when she gets hurt.

“Oh, you hurt your knee, Lily?  No need to cry, I’ll get you a bowl of ice chips to eat.”

Strange, but whatever soothes the hurt so harmlessly is fine in my book.  It’s mostly about distraction, and she has come to view it as a “treat” since we don’t let her chomp on ice every day.

As an aside, this summer, I tried to make Lily a cherry snow cone, but she much preferred a plain snow cone.  As in a snow cone consisting only of ice shavings.  I wish my idea of “dessert” was as calorie-free!

Tonight, I tried to school Lily in the distinction between wanting something and needing something.

Lily: I need ice.

Michael: Why do you need ice?

Lily: I need it.

Kristin: You need ice or you want ice?  There’s a difference between want and need.

Lily: I DESERVE ice.

Why do I feel like I was the one who just got schooled?
