[Another baby book style entry – you may want to scroll down to the video.]
Lily continues to amaze us with her burgeoning verbal skills. She has added a few new words to her expressive vocabulary. She now says diaper (dida), butterfly (buh buh), night night (ni ni), bee, Mimi (for Michael’s mother), Papa (which could work for both Michael’s dad and my dad), and rock (rah). She will now say “lah loh” when you ask her to say, “I love you.” Her new animal sound is a pig noise, and she’ll say “bee bee” for “beep beep” when asked what a car says.
Although I can’t seem to find a video of it, she is pretty funny in the way that she says, “Papa.” She says it perfectly, but she whispers it every time. It’s so weird. She doesn’t whisper any other word. Cute, though!
I decided to teach her a sign for “eat” because she does not tell me when she’s hungry, and she quickly picked up that putting her fingers to her mouth means “eat.” However, she will not tell me when she wants to eat yet – just signs when I ask her if she wants to eat. I’d also like for her to say when she’s sleepy, but we’re not getting far. She’ll repeat “na” for “nap” when I ask her if she wants a nap, but that’s as far as we’ve gotten.
I’m thinking I should also work on teaching her the word, “BORRRR-RINGGGG” in case she finds this post in her inbox.
Yikes!
Sorry folks – too much pressure, so I’m just getting this one done and getting back to cleaning up the disaster that is my house.
What is actually a little bit exciting is that her words are evolving to become more intelligible and differentiated. For example, she used to say “baba” for baby, ball, and balloon, and one needed context to figure out what she was really meaning. Now, she says “baby” quite clearly (and “ba” for ball and “baba” for balloon). See?
In this video, you can tell we still have some trouble figuring out when she’s saying, “Dada” and when she’s saying, “down.” She says, “mo mo” for “more” to indicate that she wants something on the shelf. [She still doesn’t get that you had to have something in the first place in order to get “more” of it, so we’re working on saying “please” instead when she wants something. She says, “puh puh” so far, but only when prompted.] You also get a quick “ni ni” (night night) at the end of the video. Cutie pie!
Another word that has evolved has become one of her new favorite words. She used to say, “nah nah” for “no,” but has now transitioned to saying a clear, “no no,” ALL THE TIME. It’s still pretty cute at this phase, but I’m sure it will lose its charm eventually!
Today, Lily went to Mother Goose on the Loose at the library, and on the way there she demonstrated a new and rather unfortunate (for me) skill.
She can now sing along to the radio.
Oh, brother.
Okay, so she didn’t really SING, but she started repeating the lyrics to a top-40 song I was listening to on XM Radio. It’s called “Down,” and as I’m listening I suddenly hear her pipe up in the back seat saying, her version of “down, down, down” (“dah dah dah”) during the part in which the lyrics are “baby are you down, down, down, down, down?”
Oh, dear.
She did this every time the chorus played, and again when I repeated the song for her. In any case, it has now been made abundantly clear to me that my days of listening to MY music on the radio may be over. That is, I can listen to the Kidz Bop versions of my songs, but maybe not the original versions that may have questionable language.
Because the little Miss is definitely listening, and our little myna bird will rat me out.
So to recap for my official record, she currently signs: help, eat, all done. She says: Mama, Dada, more, puppy, ball, balloon, milk, baby, bird, bubbles, umbrella, no, flag, bye bye, tickle, fruit, flower, shoes, cheese, water, phone, up, down, diaper, butterfly, night night, bee, Mimi, Papa, rock, and beep beep. She does animal sounds for bird, cow, pig, bear, owl, dog, and monkey.
She also sings R & B.
Ta da!
